Pictures of Hilo

Hilo, located on the east coast of The Big Island, is the wettest city in the United States, with an average yearly rainfall of 140 inches. Many beautiful waterfalls are within a short drive, including Rainbow, Pe'epe'e, and Waiale Falls. Compared to Kona, Hilo offers a great deal more shopping opportunities with a full-featured shopping mall.

St. Joseph Catholic Church Rainbow Falls, along the Wailuku River, is only a mile and a half from downtown Hilo. Rainbow Falls, along the Wailuku River, is only a mile and a half from downtown Hilo. Smaller falls are found on the cliffs of the river.
To the left of the falls is a winding trail protected from the sun by huge banyan trees. Local kids take an up-close and personal look of the falls. Local kids take an up-close and personal look of the falls. Boiling Pots is located two miles up the river from Rainbow Falls.

Most of Hilo's hotels are located on Banyan Drive. A sign at the base of each banyan tree on the road tells you who planted it. Some famous planters include Richard Nixon, Babe Ruth, and Amelia Earhart. In a weird coincidence, a flood washed Nixon's tree away on the day he became vice president. He planted another one...the flood waters were heard muttering “I am not a crook!” A narrow cloud forms above Mauna Kea (13,796 ft.) by orographic lifting. Mauna Kea (13,796 ft.) is the home to approximately twenty of the world's most powerful telescopes. The summit is commonly above cloud bases, which makes for clear stargazing.
