Pictures of Kailua-Kona

Located on the west coast of the Big Island, Kona is a small, but cosmopolitan town, nestled on the slopes of Haulalai. We spent three nights at the beautiful Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort, about four miles south of downtown.

One of the Hawaiian Islands between O'ahu and Hawai'i. An aerial view of the 1801 Hu'ehu'e (Hualalai) lava flow. Like most hotels in Hawai'i, the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort in Kona has an open-air lobby. The Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort extends into the ocean, providing a great view of green sea turtles.

The view from our hotel room. Poolside. Mongeese are often seen scurrying around on the rocks.

You can almost hear the sound of ukuleles in the wind. A heavy shower descending on Kailua-Kona at sunset. Lu Lu's, home of red carpet service at shag rug prices. The heavy shower (seen in photograph 18) hit just after we were seated at Lu Lu's.

We enjoyed a lu'au at the Royal Kona Resort, which our guidebook cites as a "Best Bet." The price was around $60 a head and included a large meal of pork, beef, and fish (all slowly cooked inside a pig...cool!). Oh yeah, don't forget about the pretty women struttin' their stuff on stage!

Val and her parents, Steve and Karen. Val and me. I can now check off (“Keeptin, Klingon wessal approaching!” Sorry, bad Star Trek reference.) one of my goals in life: to sip a piña colada from a fresh pineapple. The main course at the lu'au consisted of pork, beef, and fish, which were slowly cooked inside a pig by hot stones in an earthen pit, called an Imu.

Festivities culminated with an incredible fire dance. Festivities culminated with an incredible fire dance.
