These are photographs of the Kwajalein weather station, where Valerie and I worked. This facility is staffed 24 hours a day and is the location of the KPOL dual-polarization Doppler weather radar. Note that these photographs were shot in 2004 and since then, a lot of the office has changed, especially the computers.

Here's a short list of some of the equipment utilized by the weather station:

  • KPOL dual-polarization Doppler radar
  • Lightning detection network
  • A mesonet of sensors located on five islands scattered throughout the atoll
  • Upper-air RAOB (AKA "weather balloon") launch facility. RAOBs are launched twice a day at 00Z (noon local time) and 12Z (midnight local time).
  • Pyranometers (solar radiation sensors), utilized by the NASA TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission)
  • GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) data receivers
Forecasts, radar data, mesonet observations, and other products are available on the Reagan Test Site Weather Web. Due to reoccurring network interruptions on the island, some of the data may be outdated.
