Day 1: Our guides, Kyle and Elysia, picked up members of the tour group in Christchurch and headed the bus to the northwest towards the Southern Alps. We stopped at Arthur's Pass for lunch (even shared some with a kea) and took a brief hike to the Te Tautea o Hinekakai waterfall. We eventually made our way through the mountains to the western coast, stopping off in Hokitika, where many people bought jade jewelry, and spent the night in the small village of Okarito.
The snow-capped Southern Alps approach as we head northwestward out of Christchurch on Highway 73. We were lucky enough to be there during wild flower season. Southern Alps Arthur's Pass is nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps, about 100 miles west of Christchurch.
